King Vikramaditya had to visit the northern-most corner of this ground where he would find a very ancient tree. The mendicant tells that there is a task that only a King like Vikrmaditya can perform. The King asked mendicant why he was doing this. However, the mendicant had set a condition that the King must meet him under a Banyan tree in the center of the cremation ground beyond the city, at night, on the 14th day of the dark half of the month. Meanwhile, Mowgli has encountered Kaa once again in a different tree and the hungry python exacts his revenge by hypnotizing Mowgli again, and tries to eat him, but thanks to the unwitting intervention of the suspicious Sher Khan, Mowgli awakens again, tricks the snake again, and escapes. However, Shere Khan himself, who was eavesdropping on Bagheera and Hathi's conversation, is now determined to hunt and kill Mowgli himself. As Baloo sets off on foot in search of Mowgli, Bagheera rallies the help of Hathi and his patrol to make a search party. In the morning, Baloo reluctantly explains to Mowgli that the man village is best for the boy, but Mowgli accuses him of breaking his promise and runs away. Bagheera speaks to Baloo that night and convinces him that the jungle will never be safe for Mowgli so long as Shere Khan is there. Bagheera and Baloo arrive to rescue Mowgli and in the ensuing chaos, King Louie's palace is demolished to rubble.

Shortly afterwards, Baloo is tricked and outsmarted by a gang of monkeys who kidnap Mowgli and take him to their leader, King Louie the orangutan, who makes a deal with Mowgli that if he tells him the secret of making fire like a human, then he will make it so he can stay in the jungle. We worked really hard to make the show as presentable and engaging as we could,” he adds.Mowgli now wants to stay in the jungle more than ever. He used to hold me so tight that I used to get bruises on my back. I had to carry Sajjanji on my back, and he was very scared that I might drop him. The show wouldn’t have been possible without him. I haven’t met anyone as graceful as him,” says Prem, adding that Sajjan was a family friend, and hence, was cast as the ghost. His good looks were a major reason behind his casting. Arun looked like royalty, and suited the role. “The line that Betaal used to say to Vikram after he answered his question, ‘Tu bola aur main chala,’ became very popular. Sajjan’s portrayal of a ghost, wearing a white wig, yellow highlights under his eyes, blood red lips, a toothless smile and a haunting laugh, was a rage among the kids. Doordarshan had allotted a Sunday 4pm slot to air the show, which disappointed the makers, as they felt that was when most kids went out to play. Watch: The first episode of Vikram Aur BetaalĮven in terms of the timings, the makers had to struggle a bit. We would shoot 18 scenes in one day,” says Prem. There were no computer effects to create visuals, so we had to do everything physically. “Due to the low budget, we had to shoot in our bungalow, Sagar Villa. Only about a lakh was spent on every episode. That is what gripped the audience, and kept them guessing about the endings of the stories,” says Prem.

“The stories needed to build intrigue, and have interesting dialogues. He also gives credit to the show’s writer Sharad Joshi, who translated Bhatt’s stories, and made them more relevant. The challenge was to make the show appealing for kids,” says Prem. Produced by Ramanand Sagar, the show was directed by his son, Prem Sagar. In each episode, the manipulative Betaal would tell Vikramaditya a story, and at the end of each, he would trick him into answering a question, before flying away. In the show, the stories were narrated to King Vikramaditya by a ghost named Betaal, as he carried him piggyback.
